The Cuenca UIMP Teaching Center is located in the former San José Convent, property of the Carmelitas Descalzas (Barefoot Carmelites). The order bought this building in 1622 to Mr. Fernando Ruiz de Alarcón for a total of nine hundred and seventy five thousand maravedíes. The convent lies at Cuenca´s highest section overlooking the river Huécar ravine and it is part of an area declared as Humanity’s Patrimony by UNESCO. The convent was rebuilt on two occasions in the 17th century. The fist one in 1624 was leaded by stonework maestro Juan de Celaya while the second one was supervised by the carpenter maestro Pedro García and the maestro builder Antonio Velasco. The auditorium is currently located where the church used to be. As it is common in Spanish first-baroque, the building has just one nave toped by a half-barrel vault soberly decorated with a geometric molding. In 1978 the Carmelites nuns sold the convent to the County Council. It was this institution that assigned the building in 1958 to host the UIMP Teaching Center. Besides the aforementioned auditorium, the Center also has classrooms, multi-use spaces and its own University Residence Hall with 15 rooms. Generally, professors and scholars stay at this Residence Hall. The center offers accommodations facilities through agreements with hotels nearby. The total lodging capacity is 240 students enabling the celebration of several seminars at the same time. The Center and its premises provide an excellent environment for any type of teaching activity or scholarly meeting. Facilities are endowed with audiovisual media and simultaneous translation equipment.Besides its own courses and seminars, the UIMP also hosts at this Center, through regulated endorsement, symposia, congresses and activities of other public and private institutions
